BMW ActiveHybrid 5 to Hit US Roads Next Year

It’s been a while since BMW has announced their new BMW ActiveHybrid 5. The whole world waited eagerly to see the beauty roll in. But the wait seemed long. However, putting an end to all anxiety, they have finally removed the wraps off the hybridized ActiveHybrid 5 at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The hybridized 535i is based on BMW 535i sedan and engages BMW’s 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder engine, an electric drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission for the first time.

This is also their first hybrid machine employing an I-6 as its internal combustion engine.

The machine, which employs a precisely controlled energy management to the mix, also features BMW’s a 55-horsepower electric motor, for a total of 335 hp and a 5.7-second run to 60 miles per hour.

This hybridized 535i boasts not only of its sportiest performance, but also a double-digit percentage improvement in fuel economy over the BMW 535i based on preliminary results.

It also provides a relaxed and fuel-efficient driving style by tailoring the driving systems for maximum efficiency, including making more frequent use of all-electric mode.

Reports are that these models should be hitting the US roads early next year. As of now, fuel economy, prices and the other aspects are not known. But we believe that the official notification would follow soon.

BMW VisionED electric car 2011

BMW VisionED electric car 2011

BMW's concept is fast and frugal. It has a 1.5-litre plug-in electric/diesel motor that emits only 99g/km of carbon emissions and can hit 60mph in 4.8 seconds. It also has two electric motors, one powering the front wheels, the other the rears. The intelligent suspension even knows the type of road you're driving on and will adjust the dampers accordingly.

2012 BMW 1-Series M Coupe class models

Exterior and Interior

Taking inspiration from the 1988 BMW M3 Sport Evolution, the 1-Series M Coupe is 1.3 inches (33mm) longer than the M3. Also, compared to the 2011 BMW 135i Coupe, the new model is 0.2 inches longer, 2.1 inches wider, 0.5 inches taller, and rides on the same 104.7 inch wheelbase.

Like any other M model, the new 1-Series M Coupe is dominated by a muscular look. It features three large air intakes, with the central one being covered by a honeycomb-structured grille, large wheel arches, with the front one featuring chrome gill element with the M logo and exterior mirrors similar to the ones from the M3. The car’s rear features a discreet spoiler lip on the luggage compartment lid and of course two sets of apphire Metallic, and Valencia Orange Metallic.

For the interior BMW is offering high-quality, dark Alcantara with orange contrast stitching covering the door panels, door pulls, instrument cluster binnacle, dash panel, and gearshift and handbrake lever boots. The sports seats are covered in Boston leather with orange contrasting stitching and an M logo embossed in the front of each headrest, while the leather M multifunction steering wheel features the now-ubiquitous M Button for spontaneous activation of the sharpest throttle response and M Dynamic Mode of DSC.

Package and Options

The US spec version of the 1-Series M Coupe will bring with it two different packages to add luxury and technology to the already stunning BMW. The Premium package includes autodimming for the exterior and interior mirrors, as well as the rearview mirror. Other features include power front seats with driver seat memory, lumbar support, ambiance lighting, BMW Assist with bluetooth, and an iPod and USB adapter. Purchase the Premium package and the customer can also opt for the Convenience package. This package adds a navigation system, anti-theft alarm system, keyless entry, and park distance control for the rear.

Other options for the US spec version of the 1-Series M Coupe are heated front seats, smartphone Integration, satellite radio w/1 year subscription, and Harman Kardon surround sound.

The Engine

Under the hood BMW has placed a new twin-turbocharged, all-aluminum, 3.0-liter inline-6 engine that delivers an impressive 335 HP at 5,900 rpm and 332 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a close ratio 6-speed manual transmission.

BMW announced a sprint time from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, and yes, top speed is still electronically limited to 155 mph. The standing quarter-mile mark comes up in 13.2 seconds.

A few days after it’s long-awaited unveiling, the 2011 BMW 1-Series M Coupe was already seen at the Nurburgring performing its cursory test laps to determine its official ’Ring lap time. The 2011 1-Series Coupe just finished its date around the ’Ring, clocking in a time of 8:12, which is about 10 seconds faster than the E46 M3. More importantly than that, BMW’s latest addition to the M family posted faster times than its other competitors, including the E60 M5, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, and the Porsche Cayman S.

When BMW unveiled the 1-Series M Coupe, there were some people that suggested a small car like this could never deliver the same performance numbers as the BMW M3. German sports car magazine, Sport Auto, took that as a challenge and took the coupe to Hockenheim where it clocked a lap time of 1:14.1. This final number is slightly better than the 1:14.2 time obtained by the BMW M3, but not as good as Porsche Cayman R’s PDK time of 1:12.4 or the BMW E46 M3 CSL’s 1:13.5.
Prices

Sales for the new BMW 1-Series M Coupe will begin later in the spring of 2011. Pricing for the coupe will start at $47,010. As a reminder, the new model will be limited to only 2,700 units.

2012 BMW M5, European Ford C-Max Spied, 2012 Buick Regal GS Gets 270 HP Roundup Weekend

2012 BMW M5, European Ford C-Max Spied, 2012 Buick Regal GS Gets 270 HP Roundup Weekend

Been away from your computer this week and missed all the automotive news? We’ve gathered a few of the top stories of the past week along with the weekend racing schedule for your convenience.

First Look: 2012 BMW M5

With 555 hp from a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8, the newest M5 is sure to continue the nameplate’s heritage as one of the fastest, most aggressive luxury sedans on the market. The 2012 BMW M5 will get a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and the U.S. market is even slated to receive an optional six-speed manual. Massive upgraded brakes, firmer suspension with adjustable damping, and a clever torque-biasing rear differential are all expected to create fearsome track performance. It will arrive in the U.S. in spring 2012 — we can’t wait.

Spotted! Euro Ford C-Max Testing With Bigger Engine?

This camouflaged Ford C-Max was spotted in the parking lot adjacent to the Automobile Magazine offices. The Europe-only five-door appeared to have an intercooler and boost gauge, hinting that it may have one of Ford’s EcoBoost powertrains, but our sources reveal this car has a normally aspirated, direct-injected engine. Of course, the petite people mover is only coming to the U.S. market with hybrid drivetrains, it’s anyone’s guess as to why this car was traveling southeast Michigan.

2012 Buick Regal GS Officially Rated at 270 HP

Buick promised the Regal GS would be powerful, but this is more power than we expected: The Regal GS will bestow 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from its turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine. That power is routed through a six-speed manual to the front wheels; an automatic transmission will join the options list at a later date. The horsepower figures put the Regal GS squarely on par with cars like the Hyundai Sonata 2.0T and Volvo S60 T6. It goes on sale this fall.

Looking Back: A Quick BMW M5 Timeline

With the announcement of the new 2012 M5, we decided to dig through BMW’s history to trace the footsteps of the four-door performance machine. Over five generations of cars and almost 30 years, the M5’s power rating has jumped from 272 hp to today’s massive 555-hp. The M5’s true ancestor is the 1979 BMW M535i, a Europe-only model of which just 1400 were built. After a brief absence in the late 1990s, the M5 returned to the American market in 2000 with a 4.9-liter V-8 engine. Take a trip through M car memory lane with us as we highlight the most key moments in M5 history.

A Tiguan TDI Diesel For the U.S? Perhaps in 2015, Says Volkswagen

Volkswagen officials have long told us that a bringing a diesel-powered Tiguan to the U.S. was “under investigation.” With a revised Tiguan launching for 2012, Volkswagen confirms that a Tiguan TDI is still on its way to American shores — but not for a few years. For now the company must tackle the cost of certifying its diesel engines for American regulations, as well as finding enough production capacity to build more Tiguan TDIs. When the next-gen Tiguan launches in 2015, it may come with a diesel engine option.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to Offer Choice of Manual, Automatic Transmissions

Chevrolet initially said that the burly Camaro ZL1 would only be offered with a six-speed manual transmission, but the company has since changed course. Partially in response to customer demand for a two-pedal option, the 2012 Camaro ZL1 will now be made available with both a manual and automatic transmission, each with six forward speeds. The transmission is said to be related to those employed by the Corvette and Cadillac CTS-V, with manual-shift controls and aggressive shift programming.

BMW to Bring Frozen Black Edition M3 to U.S., Supplies Limited to Just 20 Units

BMW is bringing a special-edition M3 to the U.S., with unique matte-black paint, 19-inch wheels from the M3 GTS, and red-painted brake calipers. The special Frozen Black car was inspired by the Chinese-market Matte Edition M3, and follows the success of BMW’s prior Frozen Gray M3. Just 20 copies are to be produced, and each costs a cool $79,650.

First Drives: 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan, 2011 Lotus Evora S, 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible, 2012 Jaguar XKR-S

This week we strapped into the 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan, which has been face-lifted to keep the car fresh until the next generation debuts in 2015. Mildly revised sheetmetal provides for a more mature look, while the powertrain and chassis components remain mostly unchanged from the 2011 Tiguan. We took the 2011 Lotus Evora S for a blast around Laguna Seca raceway. Picking the S model adds a supercharger to the Evora’s 3.5-liter V-6 engine, providing 345 hp to propel the featherweight sports car. The XKR-S is Jaguar’s fastest production car ever, boasting 550 hp from its supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine. It proves perfectly at home at maximum-attack on the track or cruising through scenic backroads. Finally, we took a turn in the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro SS convertible, the worst nightmare of Ford Mustang fans. The SS convertible has a meaty 426 hp on tap, and rewards owners with bundles of style and performance for not much money.

BMW X6 2011

BMW X6 2011

Here’s what Alex Taylor III, a senior editor-at-large for the website, wrote about the 2011 BMW X6 — the surprisingly poor seller:

“The X6 is marketed as a ‘sports activity coupe’ that combines the attributes of an SUV (high ground clearance, all wheel drive large wheels and tires) with the stance of a coupĂ© (bold styling, dramatic sloping roof).”

BMW sales are hot, but buyers are apparently confused by the concept, put off by the chunky styling, or deterred by the high price — close to $100,000 for the turbocharged M version. So far this year, BMW has sold just 1,559 of them versus more than 10,000 of the more conventional X5.”

Bmw New Cars 2012 Future car model programmes in South Africa

Volkswagen GroupAutomotive investment in South Africa, which slowed to a trickle as the economy contracted in 2009, has lately begun to pour into the country following several rounds of interest rate cuts. Volkswagen, the market leader, is the best example, having created 1,000 new jobs created between mid-2009 and mid-2010 at its Uitenhage plant in Eastern Cape province.

Volkswagen sold 35,283 vehicles in the first half of 2010, an increase of 35% compared with the corresponding prior-year period, while the overall passenger car market rose by 28.3%. VW’s market share increased to 21.0%, up from 20.1%. This, incidentally, is identical to the percentage of the European market controlled by the OEM in the first six months of this year.

Production at Uitenhage will double this year to 120,000 units with the export volume for the new Polo expected to rise from 30,000 cars shipped in 2009 to more than 75,000 units in 2010. Three Polo-based models (Polo, Polo Vivo and CrossPolo) are set to be built in South Africa until 2017, at which time they should be replaced by rebodied cars on the same A05 platform. Before then, VWSA may add assembly of the Amarok pick-up on a new line at Uitenhage.

BMWBMW has long had local manufacturing operations in South Africa, with the 3 Series sedan a steady seller. Expect the next-generation model to again be assembled at the company’s Pretoria plant from 2013.

Mercedes-BenzWhile the BMW 3 Series is the major player in what is an unusually large segment for the size of the overall market, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan also sells well in South Africa. A new-generation model is expected to roll off the assembly line in the city of East London in 2012.

FiatFiat has only modest plans for growth in Africa, with its Rosslyn plant in South Africa’s Gauteng province central to this. The company already builds Palio-based models there and is expected to replace these in late 2011 or early 2012 with all-new vehicles from the second-generation model range. Then, in late 2013, Fiat’s next-generation Punto should appear.

Due to the existence of a manufacturing joint venture with Tata Motors in India, opportunities for Fiat South Africa to export into major right-hand drive markets continue to be limited.
FordFord’s South African operations have had much success with a Focus export programme, increasing numbers of cars going to Australia, for example. As Ford Australia will source the next model from Thailand, Ford’s Silverton plant in Pretoria will need to find other markets for its products.

Silverton also makes the Bantam (Courier), a small pick-up or ‘Bakkie’ but this aged model is overdue for replacement and a successor is expected in late 2010 or 2011. This is also the case for the larger Ranger, another pick-up. The T6-codenamed replacement should enter production at Silverton in late 2011.

General MotorsGeneral Motors’ South African operations have had a troubled recent past, having been unlucky enough to be the location of a CKD assembly project that built Hummer pick-ups. With the end of that brand worldwide, GMSA is now pushing Chevrolet harder as a low-cost mainstream nameplate while Opel is moved slightly upmarket.

GMSA’s two plants in the coastal city of Port Elizabeth are each awaiting new investment but for now, the only future product in sight is the 2013 replacement for the Chevrolet Corsa Utility. Production of this small bakkie began in South Africa in August 2004. Its model name there was originally ‘Opel Corsa Utility’ but in April 2010 it changed brands and became a Chevrolet. The next model is believed to be under development by GM do Brasil, with GMSA likely to handle right-hand drive variants.

ToyotaToyota, which is easily the most successful entrant in South Africa’s LCV market, prefers to concentrate its overall focus on rugged light-commercial based-vehicles rather than the small cars built by some rivals. A plant in Durban makes the Daihatsu-based Toyota Avanza, a minivan-SUV crossover (replacement due in 2012), the Fortuner (new model due in 2012) and Hilux (2012). Expect the next generations of these models to again use the IMV emerging markets platform.

Renault-Nissan AllianceIn South Africa, the Renault Nissan Alliance shares what was formerly a Nissan-only plant in Rosslyn. This currently makes the NP200, a small bakkie, for the Nissan brand. Little more than a rebadged Dacia Logan pick-up, albeit with toughened suspension, the NP200 is due for a styling update later in 2010. A rebodied model is expected to be launched in Europe in 2013 and in South Africa one year later.

Renault also makes several Dacia-based models at Rosslyn, among them the Sandero, with a Sandero pick-up variant reportedly due later in 2010. A facelift for the Sandero hatchback should follow in early 2011, with a full replacement expected in 2013. This and the next-generation NP200/Sandero pick-up are expected to use a re-engineered B0-platform.

bmw 323i or cadillac cts?

i am buying a used car. i have found a 2006 bmw 323i for 16,000 and a 2007 cadillac cts for 14,500. i personally want the bmw because cadillac is pretty hard to park and back up because its big and the bmw looks better. but my friend is telling me that when the new model of the bmw 3 series goes on sale in 2012, this model is going to be a lot cheaper. i really need a car right now and i cant wait a year. but i don’t want to pay too much for something i could get for less next year. would the bmw loose alot of its value? if so should i buy the cadillac or something else. i want the car to be 20,000 at most including the taxes which i going to pay when i register the car. if anyone has any opinions or suggestions for me i would really appreciate the help.

You are comparing apples to oranges here. There is NO comparison in the cars. The Caddy is a typical GM pile of junk. Aluminum head, bad motor and horrible drive train.
