Audi announced that its A1 family will become larger, as a new model which hopes to build on the success of the 3-door version, will enter the market in 2012.

We're talking about the five-door version AudiA1 called the Sportback, which measures 3,95 mm in length and which is 6mm both longer and wider than the three-door variant, in order to perfectly accommodate the new set of doors and two also add a little extra space for passengers at the back.

Offered with four seats asstandard (a fifth seat also available at no extra cost), the 2012 Audi A1 Sportback is also providing more head-rood and shoulder-room (approximately 1 cm more than in the three-door) while it's boot compartment can accommodate 270 litres (9.53 cu ft) worth of luggage or 920 litres (32.49 cu ft) with the rear seats folded.

As far as theengine range, the German car maker is offering a total of six choices, out of which three are petrol's (a 86 HP/63 kW 1.2 TFSI, and a 1.4 TFSI rated at either 122 HP/90 kW or 185 HP/136 kW) and three diesels which include a 1.6 TDI that will deliver 90 HP (66 kW) or 105 HP (77 kW) and a2.0-litre TDI outputting 143 HP (105 kW)

The most fuel efficient petrol is the 1.2-litre TFSI which returns 5.1 liters per 100 km (46.12 US mpg) while the most agile, the 185 HP variant, requires 7.0 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 Km/h (62 mph) and can reach atop speed of 227 Km/h (141 mph).

In the diesel range the least powerful 1.6-litre unit will consume 3.8-litres per 100 Km (61.9 US mpg) and will emit 99 grams of CO2/km (159.33 g/mile) while the 2.0-litre TDI will go from 0 to 100 Km in 8.5 seconds and will consume 4.1 liters of fuel per 100 km (57.37 US mpg).

The Germans from Audi will compete in the 2012 Daytona 24 Hours, but before actually throwing the R8 GRAND-AM into the race, it was only natural for them to test and fine-tune the car first. And what better place to do that other than the actual track on which the race will be held, the Daytona race track in Florida.

Based on the R8 LMS the car has been developed for the Touring class of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and after it completed around 1000 test kilometers, the main aspects that needed to be improved were in terms of aerodynamics due to the GRAND-AM regulations.

That is why the car received a new front splitter, a flat design underbody, a new rear diffuser and higher ground clearance (65 mm).

Furthermore, systems like ABS and traction control
have been deactivated and due to the usage of new tires, supplied by Continental, the Audi R8 GRAND-AM is also featuring a new suspension set-up.

Audi will field two R8 GRAND-AM racers at Daytona next year, and one of the customer teams which has been confirmed for the 2012 season is APR Motorsport from Opelika, US. The company is also in advanced talks with three other trams and a total of 4 cars could be delivered for the 2012 season.....READ MORE

Volkswagen is recalling 920 2011-12 Audi R8 Spyders because fuel may leak from the sports cars, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In the affected vehicles, which were built between May 18, 2010, and June 21, 2011, the fuel supply line may rub against the heat shield in the engine compartment. This could lead to a small fuel leak. Leaking fuel could cause a vehicle fire if an ignition source is present. You can find when your car was assembled on a label affixed to the driver's side doorjamb.

The recall is expected to begin on or around Aug. 22. Dealers will inspect the fuel line and replace it for free if necessary. Owners can call Audi at 800-822-2834 or NHTSA’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 for more info.

Hits dealerships: Spring 2012

You can kiss goodbye the V-10 engine in the former S6 and S8, as a smaller and more efficient V-8 becomes the most notable feature to the high-performance version of the luxury sedans, as well as the new S7 hatchback. Audi is introducing the three at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

All of the new S models use a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. In the S6 and S7, the boosted V-8 makes 420 horsepower, while the S8’s V-8 packs a more potent 520 hp. This is a 110-hp jump from the A6 and A7’s existing 3.0-liter supercharged V-6, and a 148-hp increase from the A8’s V-8.

In the S6, the new engine is 25 percent more efficient than the outgoing V-10, Audi says, thanks to features like cylinder deactivation, which switches between four- and eight-cylinder operation.

Teamed to the S6 and S7 are all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission. The S8 comes with an eight-speed-automatic transmission. All include a form of adaptive air suspension with variable dampening and selectable driving modes....READ MORE

The Best Three Europe Electric Cars at 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show

The Best Three Europe Electric Cars at 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show

The Frankfurt Motor Show is the place where German automotive brands have the largest stands for their brightest and best-performing cars. And these days, that means hot new electric cars. Besides the BMW i3 electric car and i8 plug-in hybrid sportscar, I see the following three EVs as the three best electrics in Frankfurt—all German.

Electric Audi A2

The A2 is Audi’s response to the i3 from arch-rival BMW. It should launch at about the same time, with the production model very close to this concept. (The interior may see some significant changes.) The A2 concept is everything you expect from an Audi, complete with high-tech look. It’s a small car—Yaris-sized—and significantly narrower than the BMW i3. So it has less road presence, but it should be easier to drive in European congested big cities. The motor and electronics is the same as the electric VW Golf, which is being tested right now. You’ll get 60 kW continuous power, and 85 kW peak, with a 31-kWh lithium battery, of which about 24 kilowatt hours are usable.               READ MORE

Audi A8 new cars 2011

Audi A8 new cars 2011

Editor's Rating: star rating

The Good: Bigger, quicker, more fuel-efficient; lots of cool high-tech features

The Bad: Less raw power than rivals; image as just a fancy VW

The Bottom Line: A wonderful luxury sedan—with many equally wonderful competitors

Up Front
Audi has been gaining market share steadily in the U.S., but in one segment—arguably the most important—the German automaker is decidedly weak: The A8, Audi's (NSU:GR) big luxury sedan, lags way behind its competitors. Through the end of August, Audi sold a paltry 568 A8s in the U.S. market this year. BMW (BMW:GR) sold 8,963 of its 7 Series models, Mercedes-Benz (DAI) 8,016 of its S-Class, and Toyota (TM) 7,575 of its Lexus LS during the same period.

It's hard for Audi to argue that it's on its way to becoming the world's leading purveyor of luxury cars (which is the goal of Volkswagen (VOW:GR), Audi's parent company) if its flagship is stuck in the doldrums. So, the company is trying to put wind in the A8's sails with a significant redesign that makes the model bigger, more fuel-efficient, more feature-laden, and nicer-looking, both inside and out. However, how popular the A8 will be in horsepower-hungry America is an open question.

The Audi still has less raw power than its rivals. The standard V8 in the new A8 is rated at 372 horsepower, 22 hp more than before, but less than the 2011 BMW 750i (400 hp), the supercharged Jaguar XJ (470 hp), and Mercedes S550 (382 hp). Only the Lexus LS 460, rated at 357 hp, trails the Audi. The torque rating of the A8's engine (a measure of the oomph available for acceleration) only rose 4 lb.-ft., to 328 lb.-ft., which trails all of its rivals, including the Lexus.

The A8's new transmission, on the other hand, is one of the smoothest on the market: a high-tech eight-speed automatic with a manual shifting function and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

The efficient transmission, relatively small engine, curb weight, and an ultra-sleek exterior help give the new A8 the best fuel economy in its class, with a rating of 17 miles per gallon in the city and 27 on the highway, for an average of 21. That beats the all-wheel-drive versions of the Porsche Panamera S (16 city/24 highway/19 average), Lexus LS 460 (16/23/18), Mercedes S550 (14/21/17), and BMW 750i (14/20/16). Surprisingly, the A8 matches the average fuel economy of the new Mercedes S400 Hybrid, and does better than the 20-mpg average mileage of the hybrid and six-cylinder-engine versions of the BMW 7 Series.

Another selling point: The A8 is gorgeous, with a long, luxurious-looking hood and a rakish roofline that curves down into a macho, chopped-off rear end. It has a more aggressive, crouched look to it than the previous model. A curving string of LED headlights make the car immediately identifiable at night; a string of orange LED turn-signal lights and running lights make it equally distinctive during the day. I suspect the headlights alone will lure some shoppers into buying this car. They're that cool.

The A8's $78,925 starting price is a bargain, especially considering that Audi's quattro all-wheel drive comes standard. In this class, only the all-wheel-drive 2011 Lexus LS 460 starts at less ($68,560). Major German rivals such as the 2011 BMW 750i xDrive (starting price: $87,175), the 2010 Porsche Panamera 4S ($94,775), and the 2010 Mercedes S550 4Matic ($96,475) are far pricier. So is the rear-wheel-drive-only, supercharged 2011 Jaguar XJ, which starts at $88,575.

If you're considering the new A8, keep in mind that a new "L" version (for long wheelbase) will be available in November, starting at $84,875. The A8L will be 5.1 inches longer than the regular-wheelbase A8, with a like amount of additional legroom in the back seat.

If power is a priority, a new Audi W12, with a huge 500-hp, 12-cylinder power plant, is due out in late spring of 2011. The W12 will jump from zero to 60 in about 4.8 seconds, the company says. No decision has been made yet as to whether an updated version of the speedy S8—the S series is Audi's equivalent of Mercedes' AMG and BMW's M high-performance cars—will be offered in North America, a spokesman says.

Behind the Wheel
The new A8 has more than adequate acceleration, but it's far from the leader. Audi says the car will jump from zero to 60 in 5.6 seconds, which is quicker than the AWD Lexus LS 460 (5.9 seconds), but slower than the Mercedes S550 4Matic (5.4 seconds), BMW 550i xDrive (5 seconds flat), and Porsche Panamera 4S (4.8 seconds).

The A8 has a lighter feel than its rivals. That's partly because its curb weight is only about 4,400 lb., 200 lb. to 300 lb. less than the all-wheel-drive versions of the Mercedes S, Lexus LS 460, and BMW 750i. But it's also because the A8's steering is calibrated to require remarkably little effort on the part of the driver.

The A8's ride is a bit boaty for my taste. The suspension smoothes out most potholes and bumps during day-to-day driving, but on the highway you feel like you're floating a little above the pavement. I prefer the stiffer suspension, heavier steering feel, and general sportiness of the BMW and Porsche. But if a luxurious ride is what you want, the A8 rivals the Mercedes S550, though it doesn't feel quite as solid and sound-deadened as the Mercedes.

The A8's new interior is beautiful. My test car was upholstered in gorgeous black and coffee-brown leather, with sumptuous suede inserts in the door panels. The tiered and sculpted dash is not only functional but one of the best-looking around. I love the way various wood, aluminum, and leather design elements curve around the dash and continue along the doors. There are cool-looking strips of ambient lighting above the doors and surrounding the overhead controls.

The front seats are unusually comfortable and there's plenty of foot, knee, and head room in the rear seat. There isn't much need to pay extra for the A8L unless you require limousine-style space in back. A center armrest (containing cupholders and a storage space) folds down between the two rear seats. The middle rear seat can accommodate a third passenger with the armrest up, but there's a hump in the floor and the space is too tight for an adult to be comfortable.

The A8 comes with all the usual high-tech add-ons, including a night-vision system that Audi says will be better than competing systems at warning of pedestrians on the road ahead, a two-screen rear-seat entertainment system, and a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. The A8 also is the first car to offer wireless Internet access within its cabin for up to eight devices, as well as a little electronic pad for entering handwritten instructions into the navigation system. As is often the case, optional-equipment prices add up quickly. The B&O sound system alone goes for $6,300.

Buy It or Bag It?

I suspect that one reason for the A8's low sales is that many shoppers view the car as little more than a gussied-up Volkswagen. However, the A8 is a much better car than that. My advice would be to test-drive it against the 2011 Lexus LS 460, which is the best buy in the segment. The Lexus not only has a lower starting price but a relatively short and inexpensive list of optional equipment.

Among the German competitors, I prefer the sportier BMW 750i and Porsche Panamera, but they're much pricier than the A8, especially with all-wheel drive. If luxury is your top priority, the Audi's interior, nice as it is, can't quite match that of a Mercedes. As I said above, the Mercedes S550 also feels quieter and more solidly made than the A8. However, the A8 comes close to a Mercedes in build quality and interior sumptuousness at a much lower price.

The bottom line is that the new A8 is a wonderful car, but it doesn't really stand out from its many equally wonderful competitors.

Audi, well known for creating some of the most desired automotive interiors in the business, is looking to push the boundaries of personalization and further increase the levels of quality of interior design in its vehicles.

Standard inlays are designed to appear more metallic and robust

Aluminum surrounds and fine stitching are already hallmarks of other Audi models

The Audi design team is constant search of new ideas for Color and Trim

The first vehicle to benefit from this will be the new Q3, revealed at the Shanghai motor show in April. It's interior contains a new style of inlays made from larch wood and aluminum, a range of interior colors and an optional LED interior light package.
Audi's new crossover offers potential buyers four further material options than other models in the range, including two new ones developed by Rosalie Schrader, a designer working in Audi's Color and Trim team, led by Susanne Stöbe.

"We want to give the exterior and the interior a strong aesthetic – its very own soul," Schrader says.
The standard inlays within the Q3 – which come in platinum or truffle beige, dependent on the interior color – are designed to appear more metallic and robust compared to its predecessors as the Audi design team continues seek new ideas.

One such design is a dark brown, open-pored inlay made of larch wood. The inlay has retained its natural wood structure and slightly rough surface feel as the Audi team has largely avoided the application of varnish. The manufacturing process, developed in partnership with a supplier, enables the inlay to appear more three-dimensional and more natural.
The manufacturing process aims to highlight the growth phases of the wood, with slightly raised stripes in the soft structure the result of the fast growth stage. The late wood that grows in summer condenses into a harder structure in the wood relief, making these stripes deeper.

Another new feature is a 3D aluminum mesh material constructed from two components. A honeycomb pattern emerges when the surface of finely brushed aluminum is stamped out, with each hexagon having a diameter of 2.5mm – 12 of them fit within a square centimeter. A holographic white surface with a three-dimensional appearance lies under the aluminum mesh.

"We wanted to combine two technically sophisticated surfaces in order to produce a completely new look," says Stöbe.
The steering wheel and gearshift are finished in leather, with many of the controls feature an aluminum-look finish. The upholstery is offered in two standard and two optional materials, along with Milano and Fine Nappa leather as well as a combination of leather and Alcantara.

The Audi Q3's instrument panel is offered in two colors, while five color combinations are possible within the car – black/black, black/chestnut brown, black/chennai brown, black/titanium gray and truffle beige/pistachio beige. The S line sport package transforms the vehicle's interior entirely to black.

"The color palette ranges from opaque colors to cool, technical gray and black tones, to expressive interior colors," Schrader points out. "The natural colors allow us to underscore the off-road character of the car especially well."

The optional interior LED light package provides interior and reading light by illuminating the doors, headlining, footwells, vanity mirrors, storage compartments and even the cupholders. The lights have also been designed for low energy consumption. The Bose surround sound system is another optional extra, and the frames of the woofer and mid-range speakers in the front doors form rings of white light.

Other extras designed for the Q3 include a hard-drive-based navigation system that operates alongside a seven-inch color screen, on-board Internet access and a parallel parking assistant that uses 12 ultrasonic sensors to help when parking in narrow spaces.
