There's something inherently satisfying about using a blunt force object for its exact purpose, be it ripping the cover off a baseball with a Louisville Slugger or bonking one of those animatronic pop-up varmints with a rubber mallet at the local arcade. At the opposite end of the spectrum, there's something equally satisfying about using a precise tool designed for an exact purpose, be it a Montblanc pen or a pickle fork. With the introduction of its 2012 Chevrolet Caprice PPV, General Motors is betting that law enforcement customers are willing to trade-in the former brand of satisfaction for the latter.

For decades now, an overwhelming majority of America's policemen and women have relied on the four-wheeled equivalent of a blunt object, the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, as a primary tool in combating crime. Stubbornly resistant to change since its introduction during the Carter administration, the Crown Vic proudly rode its pig iron and scrimshaw frame into retirement earlier this month, a victim of growing legislative hurdles and slowing sales. Chevrolet Sonic Gets Up To 40 MPG on Highway on 2012

Chevrolet Sonic Gets Up To 40 MPG on Highway on 2012

2012 Chevrolet Sonic subcompact will get an EPA-estimated 40 miles per gallon highway with the Ecotec 1.4L turbo and manual transmission, the company said Thursday.
In city driving, the 2012 Sonic will get 29 mpg city, which is in line with its small car rivals in this class - 2012 Ford Fiesta SFE and the 2012 Hyundai Accent.

The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic will begin arriving in U.S. dealerships this fall, starting at $14,495 for the base sedan and $15,395 for the base hatchback, including destination but excluding tax, title, license and dealer fees.

The base model, without the turbo, fitted with 1.8L manual gets fuel economy of 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway and the automatic gets 25 mpg city and 35 mpg highway.

The Sonic's 1.4L Ecotec turbocharged engine is SAE certified at 138 horsepower (103 kW) – 18 horsepower (14 kW) more than Ford Fiesta and is essentially the same engine used in the Chevrolet Cruze in a smaller, lighter package designed for a greater feeling of performance.

The turbo engine is also rated at 148 ft.-lbs. (200 Nm) of torque between 2,500 and 4,900 rpm. The wide rpm range for the maximum torque – a specific trait of turbocharged engines – helps the engine deliver a better driving experience and performance.
